Alternator Testing using multimeter.
Rotor tests Check the rotor for an open circuit by measuring for resistance between the slip rings. Some resistance less than 5 ohms indicates continuity. If there is no continuity infinite 0 ohms. If not, replace the rotor.
·
Check the rotor for grounded circuits by
measuring for resistance between the rotor and slip ring. Any amount of
resistance indicates ground continuity. The resistance should be infinite 0
ohms. If not replace the rotor.
·
Connect ohmmeter across any pair of stator
leads. Less than 0.5 ohms resistance indicates stator is okay. Whereas any high
reading would mean open circuits.
However, in case both readings
are low, it means that the diode is short- circuited. Whereas both readings
would indicate the open circuit.
