Tyre Ratings & Best Tyres for Road Use — With Real Vehicle Examples

1. Tyre Ratings: What to Look For These ratings appear on the tyre sidewall and help you judge quality, safety, and performance. Treadwear Rating This tells you how long a tyre is likely to last. The higher the number, the longer it should last. A treadwear of 400 means the tyre will last about 4 times longer than a baseline test tyre. Traction Rating This shows how well the tyre grips on wet roads. The grades are: AA (excellent), A (good), B (moderate), and C (poor). Temperature Rating This tells you how well the tyre resists heat. High heat resistance means the tyre won’t overheat and burst at high speeds. Grades: A (best), B, and C. Load Index This number shows how much weight one tyre can safely carry. You must match this to your vehicle's weight class. Speed Rating This tells you the maximum speed the tyre can handle safely. For example, H = 210 km/h, T = 190 km/h, etc. 2. Best Tyres for Personal Vehicles (By Model) a. Toyota Corolla / Honda Civic Recommended Tyre: Michelin Pr...

Check these while testing your vehicle.

Assuming you are a qualified driver, or you are able to tell a driver what you want, then a road test is an excellent way of checking the operation of a vehicle.

A checklist is again a useful reminder of what should be done. A typical road test following a service or inspection would be much as follows (but remember to check specific manufacturers’ requirements):

Ø Fit trade plates to vehicle if necessary.

Check operation of starter and inhibitor switch (automatic).

Ø  Check operation of lights, horn(s), indicators, wipers and washers.

Ø  Check indicators self-cancel.

Ø  Check operation of all warning indicators.

Ø  Check footbrake and handbrake.

Ø  Check engine noise levels, performance and throttle operation.

Ø  Check clutch for free play, slipping and judder.

Ø  Check gear selection and noise levels in all gears.

Ø  Check steering for noise, effort required, free play, wander and self-centering.

Ø  Check suspension for noise, irregularity in ride and wheel imbalance.

Ø  Check footbrake pedal effort, travel, braking efficiency, pulling and binding.

Ø  Check speedometer for steady operation, noise and operation of mileage recorder.

Ø  Check operation of all instruments.

Ø  Check for abnormal body noises.
